Day 3 – “St. Patrick’s Day”

We started the dating going to the Saint Patrick Center in Downpatrick, where we learned a little about the history of St. Patrick himself.

Our tour started with the early life of St. Patrick. Born into a wealthy family in Roman Britain, Patrick was taken as a slave by Celtic raiders at the age of sixteen. During his time in bondage, Patrick began to deepen his faith and prayed up to 100 times a day. After six years in slavery, he had a vision from God telling him to flee towards the coast of Ireland. He escaped, and traveled about 200 miles towards the Southeast of Ireland, and eventually found his way home to Britain.

He became a cleric, and although content where he was, an angle appeared to him telling him to return to Ireland and convert the people. In 432 AD he went back to Ireland and would go on to convert “tens of thousands” to the Christian faith, making Ireland a bastion of Christianity.

Saul Church was the first church in Ireland and set up by Saint Patrick. The current structure sits upon the original site.
