Today we were taken to various archaeological sites around Downpatrick and the surrounding countryside. We started at the Ballynoe Stone Circle, which was erected ~3300 BC before the Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge. We went on the day of the Summer Solstice and apparently some people had a pagan festival there and tied strings on the trees.

We then drove along the coast of County Down and stopped to take some photos.

After this we went to a small fishing village Kirkistown, saw the oldest golf course in Ireland, as well as some seals in the harbor.

We then went to see Patrick’s well, which became a holy site for pilgrims who came to the area to bathe in the holy waters. There was a church built on the property, but it was destroyed during the Cromwellian invasion. We also stopped to see the statue of Saint Patrick that overlooks Saul’s Church.

We stopped our sightseeing tour at a Norman castle which oversaw the water and Mourne Mountains.
