I was able to get in and see the site which has become tied to 1916, but this jail/gaol has been in operation since 1796. The jail became an important site during the Famine as many people chose to stay inside the jail, sleeping on the floors, instead of being outside and facing possible death or theft. Also, the jail’s youngest criminal was a three year old who was charged with begging and sentenced to three weeks in the prison.
Although many of us are familiar with the main hall we’ve seen in countless movies such as Michael Collins, the vast majority of the prison looks like the cold, dark, damp cell where Eamon DeValera was kept.

Below is the site of execution for the leaders of 1916.
